A NEW YEAR!

I am so excited for this new school year!  I've been so excited and busy preparing that I have neglected my blog.  Well, this year is going to be a little bit different from the past two years.

I am using a math curriculum that is designed to help students that are missing skills from the previous grades.  It is called Moving with Math!

We just took the pre-test and have had a week worth of lessons.  The students are enjoying working on skills that they know they were weak in, but might have been embarrassed to go back and practice.
Moving with Math uses a lot of manipulatives to teach students about fundamental math concepts and build those skills up!  And of course there are games!  I love games and the student love games.  It is a great way to re-enforce and practice skills with out worksheets.

I will be assessing the skills daily with "daily reviews".  The students have a binder and are keeping up with their progress.  IF you are a parent, you can expect updates on your child's progress with Moving with Math when student's get their progress reports and report cards.

If you have any questions email me!  or post a comment

The next two weeks 3/10 - 3/21

I think all the students feel a little refreshed from the long snow break this week.  That being said, the next two weeks we are really going to focus on learning some new skills.  TCAP is approaching, all my classes have learned about 75% of the skills assessed on TCAP.  Here is what each grade will focus on next week.

7th - scale factor with area and volume

6th - area and volume of a circle

8th - Find measures of the angles formed by parallel lines cut by a traversal.

Update!

An update has been long over due!  This year is flying by and I think we are all looking forward to warmer weather and sunshine.  I am very proud of my students.

7th grade has completed tests on slope and we are moving on into the world of geometry.  This week we have focused on reviewing the basics such as perimeter, area, and volume.  In the coming weeks we are going to be learning about angles and then applying those skills to determine the similarity of triangles.

6th grade has been working hard learning the building blocks of algebra.  What is a variable?  Solving algebraic expressions and solving equations.  We are taking our test tomorrow and will turn our focus on learning to plot points on a coordinate grid.

8th grade spend some time reviewing slope and then learning about slope-intercept form.  They graphed equations and plotted the slope of many many lines.  We are now focusing on angles and will begin learning about the Pythagorean theorem next week.

Model integer problems using counters

Cameron did a great job with this objective.  My 7th graders are really catching on to adding/subtracting integers!

Friday!

Friday is finally here and we are wrapping up a productive week in math class.

This week students learned:
6 - Identified place values and learned how to estimate a product.
7 - Multiply and divide decimals
 8 - Add/Subtract and Multiply/Divide Integers

I'm proud of the hard work my students put in. Next week my 6th graders are going to learn how to multiply decimals. 7th graders will continue to work on long division and division of decimals. 8th Graders will be mastering integers and reviewing proportions from last year.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!
